Questions You Should be Asking the World Around You

Limited print run for Indonesia’s Playboy

Little known facts about  freedom of speech around the world. Playboy’s run in Indonesia started out in 2006 in what was considered to be a step forward in globalization.  It featured the regular assortment of trend articles, hot interviews, and women; but in stark contrast to its counterpart in the U.S., Indonesia’s models were non-nude. It was carefully constructed this way by its editors to make the magazine fit in with Indonesia’s conservative stance on pornography. Despite the fact that other “similarly themed” magazines could be found on the stands at the time, Islamist groups such as MMI (Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia) and FPI (Front Pembela Islam) staged rigorous protests before the first issue was even released. As such, the publication only lasted six issues, (according to a few Indonesian blogs) ending its official run on February of 2007.  There are 3 additional covers floating around on the internet with April 2007, June 2007, and September 2008 stamped on them however.  Additionally there are 8 covers in total from its first edition in April of 2006, to the final issue on February of 2007. Could they underground editions? I’ll let you decide.
