Questions You Should be Asking the World Around You
This is the first time I’ve seen this photo, and it’s strange because as far as internet searches go, the earliest date I could find on this photo is May 12, 2015. It took more than a year for this photo to surface for me personally. RT, Yahoo, the India times, and a french website called Tekiano all have the caption:
Palestinians place a red carpet between the ruins of houses, that witnesses said were destroyed by Israeli shelling during a 50-day war last summer, before they display a film on the war in the east of Gaza City May 12, 2015. (Copyright: Mohammed Salem/Reuters)
This is always a touchy subject; the Palestine/Israel conflict. There are many who know, but much much more who don’t know, that if you talk about Palestine on the internet, you run the risk of being cyber stalked by Israeli agents.
If you’re an internet celebrity on Youtube, your videos get flagged for demonetization. If you’re a politician, you get blackmailed. If you’re a movie star, you get blacklisted.
The list is long and seemingly endless, and if you’ve seen the uniquely American phenomenon with journalists being blackballed for criticizing Clinton, then won’t need to ask why this same situation exists for Israel and Palestine.
On the other hand, the title of this blog post itself is a little bit weak. From my perspective, my calling of this photo a “brilliant idea,” does very little to help all those poor people in Palestine living in poverty.
Can photos on a small blog like mine save lives? Probably not. But can photos on small blogs like mine change the way we perceive the war in Palestine? Yes. Definitely yes.
