Questions You Should be Asking the World Around You

It Just Hit Me. New York is a Blue State.

I’ve always assumed New York was conservative. It’s one of those things that I’ve never given much thought. It’s odd that I simply associated cold winters with conservatism, because the opposite of it would be California, which is warm all year round and is very very liberal. Donald Trump lives in New York so that would be kind of awkward. A conservative president and a blue state.  Will New York become a Red State in the future? No-one can say at this moment, but it will certainly be an exciting thing to watch.

I know I said in a previous post that I would be writing about hygiene tips, but I’ve recently come across new data that contradicts what I was going to write, so I’m going to spend a bit of time thinking about it before I post. It’s nothing big, just personal experiences from other people about zits, and acne.

Hmm, what made you think of that?

If you’re curious, I used to live in the city, now in a lovely town 4 hours out. Rural NY state is mostly red, with blue urban areas (syracuse, rochester, maybe buffalo, some college towns), also the hudson valley is blue and of course NYC and its suburbs. Some of the red parts are somewhat similar to rural PA. State and local politics is party-machine driven, In the state capitol, though, it can get ugly or so I’m told. Due to the city’s ability to raise enormous sums by both R and D parties (wall streeters typically contribute generously to both at the same time), it’s hard to compete with anyone backed by the state parties but it’s been done successfully at a local level. Upstate and city residents both have a deep misunderstanding of each other. At the same time, the “red” parts are surprisingly responsive to a number of economic-social and environmental issues. Towns can and do experiment with cool political innovations, for example in recent moves to prevent fracking (at the same time the state allows disposal of PA’s fracking wastewater to be used as de-icing fluid in NY state roads in the winter, overriding local jurisdictions. yay.). Taxes are quite high, social services are decent, policing (in a broader sense, as in everything is regulated) is heavy.

One thing is, NYC residents, with the heavy wall street influence, are in a way are conservative in terms of anything that upsets the social structure, but are quite progressive on most social issues.

Somehow I had a sense that NY was just like how you described it. Conservative, yet progressive. It’s as if NY is a convergence point for the old and the new. I love it!
