Questions You Should be Asking the World Around You
Too Funny! I guess Buzzfeed never had the mojo from the start.
The New York Times reported that intelligence officials considered the material ‘so potentially explosive’ that they decided they needed to tell Trump, Obama, and top congressional leaders about it.
The paper described the memos as being ‘generated by political operatives seeking to derail Mr. Trump’s candidacy.’
CNN’s story was reported by four reporters, including former Watergate scribe Carl Bernstein.
Bernstein said on air that the raw intelligence memos were drafted by a retired MI6 British intelligence operative. MI6, formally the Secret Intelligence Service, conducts foreign intelligence gathering for the UK government.
The operative had been hired by a political opposition research firm who did work first for Republican and then Democratic political opponents of Trump.
‘He then took it to an FBI colleague that he had known in his undercover work for years,’ Bernstein said on CNN.
He said a British diplomat in Russia became aware of the findings independently.
The ambassador then took the information to Arizona senator and staunch Russia critic Senator John McCain, who then ‘personally’ provided the information to FBI Director Comey.
On Tuesday, CNN published an article stating that US intelligence officials presented a two-page synopsis of classified documents, which included claims that Russian operatives have compromising personal and financial information about Trump, to the president elect and President Barack Obama. The information was included as an annex to the classified version of the report prepared by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on Russian influence on the 2016 presidential election, CNN reported.
Later in the day, Buzzfeed News published the entire set of memos, which were purportedly “prepared for political opponents of Trump by a person who is understood to be a former British intelligence agent.” The dossier had been circulating among elected officials, journalists and the intelligence community for weeks, according to Buzzfeed’s Ken Bensinger.
Included in the report was the accusation that Trump has “personal obsessions and sexual perversion,” including for graphic sex acts.
Scrolling down to the bottom, we find the funniest part.
“Publishing this document was not an easy or simple call, and people of good will may disagree with our choice,” Buzzfeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith wrote in an email to staff. “But publishing this dossier reflects how we see the job of reporters in 2017.”
The remarkable thing? It’s all fake. And not only fake; it’s a prank perpetuated by 4chan, on Rick Wilson himself. A post on 4chan on october 26 stated “mfw managed to convince CTR and certain (((journalists))) on Twitter there’ll be an October surprise on Trump this Friday” along with a picture of a smug face with a hash name.
on november 1, a person without a picture but is assumed to be the same person posted “So they took what I told Rick Wilson and added a Russian spy angle to it. They still believe it. Guys, they’re truly fucking desperate – there’s no remaining Trump scandal that’s credible.”
