Questions You Should be Asking the World Around You

Doh! Fancy Frankenstein

Remember when a cybersecurity firm called Crowdstrike claimed that Russia hacked the DNC? They claimed they were certain of this because of similarities found between signatures on a hacked Ukrainian app and on the DNC computers.  Crowdstrike supposedly then narrowed their investigation down to a group of individuals which they affectionately nicknamed ‘Fancy Bear.’

The story has taken a twist. Voice of America and the Ukraine military are now disputing the part about the Ukrainian app.

In 2013, a London based think tank called IISS released a batch of data that showed Ukraine moving Howitzers from one division to another. It was a reassessment and reallocation of military assets.

Crowdstrike then took that data, they slipped it in between a bunch of other stats, and they enveloped it in a supposed 2 year aggregated data report. Except the problem was they never talked to IISS. Crowdstrike misinterpreted the part about reallocation and reassessment. Instead, Crowdstrike claimed that a Ukrainian app was hacked by Russia, and in turn it caused a severe loss of up to 50% of Ukrainian Howitzers in the battlefield.

Because of this flawed understanding of the IISS data, Crowdstrike correlated the Ukraine app to the DNC computers, and this is where we get the ‘Russia hacked the DNC’ conspiracy.

Both IISS and the Ukrainian Military are now laughing at Crowdstrike. Even the Ukrainian military is saying that the app was never hacked to begin with.
