Questions You Should be Asking the World Around You

Japan’s Doing it Right

If your city tops out at a more expensive spot than New York, you know your city is overcrowded.

It’s not a mystery that the price of food and housing go up when the demand goes up.  Japan has a problem with overcrowded cities and underpopulated rural areas.  Japan’s government seeks to balance the average costs of living between the two, and also to raise Japan’s birth rates to combat population decline.

The top 10 most expensive cities in the world, according to CNBC:

10 Copenhagen

9  New York

8 Paris

7 Geneva

6 Seoul

5 Osaka

4 Tokyo

3 Zurich

2 Hong Kong

1 Singapore

The international argument is that Japan should take in more refugees. Error! This is not a valid solution to population decline.  This is also not a solution to fixing Japan’s cost of living.

Japan’s solution is to relieve the economic burden of having children by lowering the cost of rent in rural areas, and by giving new families gifts. Correct! This is the right solution. It fixes the money problem, and the population problem. Small towns in rural Japan have succeeded in raising their birth rates compared to megacities. The costs of living in small towns in Japan are also significantly lower.

My solution is to encourage more free time. Less focus on careers. One of the biggest complaints by young Japanese people is that vacations stress them out. Japanese workers can only feel good if they’re working 15 hour days, 7 days a week.  They are working themselves to death!  This is also the reason why so many Japanese men and women don’t date.  They don’t have the time!

When a person marries him or herself to his or her job, it’s over.  The romance is dead, the intimacy is gone. This should have been obvious from the get go.

Working oneself to exhaustion is not natural. Letting the birth rate fluctuate on its own is natural.

Japan will be permitting a total of 300 Syrian refugees from now until 2021.  They will be given support to find jobs, and students will be given $1240 in allowances every month. A very modest move in comparison to Germany where crimes have skyrocketed due to the influx of unvetted refugees (crimes committed by both refugees and German citizens).

Japan is doing the right thing.
