Questions You Should be Asking the World Around You
Who else loves reading manga? I guess that was a rhetorical question because if you had found this post through the reader app, then you would have obviously had to have been browsing the manga hashtag! ha ha.
Then if you would have clicked on my homepage, you would have been shocked to find all the non manga related posts on this blog! Some of them negative, some of them half way in between. My attempts at approaching things in a non controversial way.
I can’t be writing about the doom and gloom of the world all the time!
Masamune Shirow is one of my favorites. Most people know him by the movie Ghost in the Shell. It had Scarlett Johansson in it. Hmm thinking about it now, I don’t think people mention his name at all. He has been overshadowed by Scarlett’s popularity. But did you know that he had been a manga artist for over 35 years?
I discovered him when I was about 12 years old. It was through a graphic novel called Dominion: Tank Police.
I couldn’t tell you how much I wanted to be a comic book artist. I spent all my time practicing.
His art style really captivated me. He had a strange way of drawing vehicles. Specifically the wheels. He had to make them stick out far and he had to make them wide. Kinda like this.
This was an unusual design back in those days. This was back in the mid 90’s, and back then all cars had narrow tracks and short wheelbases.
Cars have evolved! Cars now have longer wheelbases and wider tracks. The trunk sections are almost always made to sit flush with the roof line, and the wheels are made to appear more like limbs. Looking at them from either the front or the sides, they now appear to be shaped in an arc. All the parts are smooth and flowy, and I really dig this design.
I’m willing to bet that it was Masamune Shirow’s art that prompted this evolution.
This one is from a manga called Appleseed. It’s the same title as the one that I posted a picture of in this blog post yesterday.
Appleseed – A story about police officers Deunan Knute and Briareos.
Dominion – A story about Leona Ozaki, a police officer.
Ghost in the Shell – A story about Motoko Kusanagi, an intelligence officer.
The Ghost in the Shell movie with Scarlett Johansson is supposed to be good, I heard a lot of people say. I’m still hoping for an anime adaptation featuring Shirow’s own artwork, but stuff like this rarely ever happens. The manga artists draw the mangas, and anime studios draw the animes.
Still, it doesn’t hurt to wish!
