Questions You Should be Asking the World Around You

Good Alternative to Eating Meat

This is a good way to save money if you’re in college, or if you’re just looking to change things up a little.  I was trying to cook up onion rings last night when I accidentally discovered a new dish.  I’m sure this is already a common thing elsewhere, but I’m a newb with cooking, so here’s my discovery.

I first cut the onion into thin slices.  Preheated the frying pan with medium heat. Rinsed the onions with water. I placed them into the fridge while I prepared the batter.

1 cup of all purpose flour, 1 egg, a quarter cup of milk, and 2 tablespoons of salt.  Mix the batter together until it’s thick and goopy.

When that’s finished, take the onions out of the fridge and submerge them into the batter.  Pour 5 tablespoons of cooking oil on to the frying pan, then gently place the onions 1 at a time into the pan. Cook until they’re brown.

Now normally, I would have ended up with nice golden onion rings, but I think the milk prevented the batter from sticking.  So what happened was, the batter oozed onto the frying surface, and it turned my onion rings into tiny omelettes.  Cooking them till the batter seared gave them an extra tough texture.  This gives the onion rings a meat like toughness, that when you bite into them, it really feels the same.  The 2 tablespoons of salt had also provided its taste with a kick, so it was really delicious.

Onions and rice. Try it sometime.

Next time, I’ll be dusting the onions with flour and redipping them twice into the batter, to see if that helps keep the batter from slipping off.
