Questions You Should be Asking the World Around You

Quick Tips for Drawing Faces

I see that there are a few people interested in improving their skills with drawing! I’m not very good, but I’ve picked up a lot of tricks over the years by reading comic books and watching manga. Let me share these super easy tricks with you!

The first thing to do is to draw circles. This will help loosen up your wrist. It only takes a few minutes to master!

Next up are the guide lines. Start by drawing a line right down the center to help with the placement of the nose. The eyes should be placed about halfway down the face. Then choose the proportionate sizes for the nose and mouth.

Over time you will discover that your drawings will achieve a certain style and consistency. This will help people recognize your drawing style even if they don’t see your name!

The eyes are undoubtably the hardest things to make. This is where most artists prefer to zoom in to add the finest of details. This is the ‘make it or break it‘ part of the drawing. Getting the eyes right will cause people to fall instantly in love with your drawing.

Even if the eyes are ‘the windows to the soul,’ we can’t forget about the ears. A super easy way to do this is to split the drawing into 3 manageable parts. The orange line, the green line, and the blue line.

Ears come in many different shapes and sizes, and so your options are plentiful here. Should the ears be tall? Round? Wide? It’s your decision to make!

For the lips you can try using the letter ‘M.’

One M at the top, one M at the middle, then a curved line at the bottom.

Not too bad right? The secret is to do whatever you like. There’s no hard coded rule that every artist needs to follow. When the brush meets the canvas, your heart takes over for you.

You’re welcome :) And not to worry! Drawing seems hard as first but you get better at it with practice. It’s just like riding a bike or swimming, when you train your muscles to do specific movements your muscles become accustomed to them. :)
